Gus Maples – Lucedale, Mississippi

Gus Maples studies Public Policy Leadership and Spanish as a senior at the University of Mississippi. As a student in the Trent Lott Leadership Institute, Maples has studied abroad in Ecuador and South Africa. Last summer, he interned for U.S. Senator Thad Cochran in Washington, D.C. and learned more about the policymaking process in our nation’s capital. On campus, Maples serves as a second-year member of the Ole Miss Columns Society, and has held numerous positions in the Associated Student Body government’s executive and legislative branches since his freshman year. Additionally, he is a member of the university’s Mortar Board and Order of Omega.

When asked why he considers himself a Republican, Maples stated, “I was raised with a respect for values- both strong family values with a commitment to serving my neighbors and community, as well as respect for the value of a hard earned dollar. I admire and support conservative economic policies, and consider free markets to be the ultimate representation of democracy.”
